Books » Fiction & Literature » General Water for Elephants: a Novel By Sara Gruen
When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, grifters, and misfits - the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth - a second-rate travelling circus struggling to survive during the Great Depression, making one-night stands in town after endless town. Jacob, a veterinary student who almost earned his degree, is put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie.
It is there that he meets Marlena, the beautiful young star of the equestrian act, who is married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable until he discovers a way to reach her. Water for Elephants is illuminated by a wonderful sense of time and place. It tells a story of a love between two people that overcomes incredible odds in a world in which even love is a luxury that few can afford.

I spent the day going through travel books, also planning mileages of trips and packing clothes in the caravan for our autumn winter tour and I am no closer to a decision as the where we will be spending most of winter than I was at the start of the day.
I have had one of those days when I don't feel I have profitably used my time well.
I think because I have unfinished skin cancer surgery and because I am in the middle of writing a novel, it is hard to get enthused at this point about touring. I need the medical appointments over first I feel. One thing I did do was to pack an entire library of books into the caravan and I am looking forward to reading these.

Continuing with my current interest in historical and Regency romance, I see that the new Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte movie is about to be released and I will be eager to see this version of the story. I remember crawling up with this book when I was about 12. I loved Jane Eyre I think I would have given that deceitful brooding Mr Rochester the flick, I wanted and got a more open and honest gentleman as my romantic hero, :-), Lucky enough to still have him after 42 years of marriage. I'm still a lover of the historical romance and more a fan of the spirited heroines in Jane Austen's novels. I don't thing she was into brooding melancholy like the Bronte sisters were. Pride and Prejudiced by Jane Austen, is my favorite from that era and I am rereading it..Jane Eyre movie rekindles Austen versus Bronte, battle of the bonnets.
I decided I want an Australian literary agent. Any recommendations of good ones, for mainstream, Australian epic fiction? I have little enough time to write, so I do not plan to try to find a publisher on my own when my novel is finished - that's still a long way off as I intend to re write and re write until I cannot make it any better. I found these useful blogs. Part one of searching for an agent. Kylie Griffin's Blog: Searching for the Holy Grail...umm, Agent! (part 1) Kylie Griffin's Blog: Search for the Holy Grail...umm, Agent!
