Someone accidentally booby trapped my fridge and when I opened it late last night to give in to a late night snack (a healthy one and needed actually as I worked though till 3am) a large frozen chicken sprang out of the top shelf at me.

It was a keystone Cops moment as I tried to catch the chicken and return it to the shelf spilling the contents of a full container f beetroot and its juices all over me and the fridge.   as I was already battling to get my job finished by 3am I just left the mess in the fridge with several T Towels in there to blot up the red liquid.  lol, I have not been game to look yet.  I need more coffee before I face the mess.

It got me thinking about practical ways aside from thinking the fridge might be booby trapped, to avoid late night snacking.

These ones are from the American Dietitians Association.

How Can I Conquer My Downfall: Snacking at Night?

1/ . Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. The majority of people who struggle with night eating are those who skip meals or don't eat balanced meals during the day.
2/. Eat your evening meal in the kitchen or dining room, sitting down at the table.
3/. Drink cold, unsweetened raspberry tea. It tastes great and keeps your mouth busy.
4/. Change your night-time schedule. It will take effort, but it will pay off. You need something that will occupy your mind and hands.
5/. If you're emotional-eating at night, you need to focus on getting in touch with what's going on and taking care of yourself in a way that really works. Find a method of coping with your stress that doesn’t involve food.
6/. Put a sign on the kitchen and refrigerator doors: "Closed after Dinner."
7/. Brush your teeth right after dinner to remind you of your weight loss goals: No more food.
8/. Eat without engaging in any other simultaneous activity. No reading, watching TV, or sitting at the computer.  That tip is not good for me, I'm a novelist I need to use my computer at night.

Remember: eating late at night won't cause weight gain on healthy weight-loss programs. It's how many kilojoules—not when you eat them—that counts.

I'm glad the above is true.  I chose a lot of low calorie vegetables, and a slice of low fat cheese on one slice of wholegrain toast. Around 200 to 250 calories worth depending on how many vegetables.and my evening snack is usually 4 hours after dinner when I eat it and with another 4 hours of work still ahead of me.  It is rarely a diet sin though it does stop me loosing weight or slows it down so unless I am hungry I would be better skipping it and this is where my late nights are ill effecting my weight loss..

Another way we show our love for each other is to support each other in fitness endeavour’s and while not focusing on looks we do focus on each other’s health needs and are both aware of the seriousness of accumulating excess body fat around the waist.

Nurturing my Mind.

I Setting goals, action plans, to do lists that prioritize my actions. ,

I need to find and keep this balance, this overlapping of the mind spirit and the body

Developing A Healthy Relationship with Food

Along with balanced, kilojoule controlled and portion controlled food choices it is importance to tune into physical and emotional eating cues as well as focusing on the pleasure of. Being mindful about what you eat, is the first step toward making healthier, more satisfying choices.

Can I locate an Accredited Practising Dietitian?

In Australia and New Zealand, the Dietetic Associations offer this information on their websites. In Australia log onto www.daa.asn.au - go to ‘Find an APD'. In New Zealand log onto www.dietitians.org.nz - go to ‘Find a Dietitian'.

Achieving an Active Lifestyle

Research has shown that an active lifestyle is a critical factor in successful weight loss. While it's true that physical activity supports consistent weight loss, its role is even more critical in long-term weight loss. In research conducted by the National Weight Control Registry in the US, of 4500 individuals who have lost at least 13 kilograms and kept it off for one year, it was found that such individuals, on average, are physically active for 60 minutes a day.

Engage in a variety of cardiorespiratory, resistance and stretching activities.

Having a Balanced Approach to Living

As weight issues are, in part, a reflection of thoughts and emotions we need strategies to develop a more balanced, positive mindset and address issues like lack of time, ongoing motivation and changing body image.

I am always working on   this balance, sometimes it is easy, sometimes hard tat is the nature of life.  Just keep aiming for excellence and don't expect perfection, it is consistency that allows us to achieve our goals not perfection.

I do not often pray, but I am praying for the friends and people in the path of this monster.

I am going to try to be aware, be concerned, but as I am not in physical danger, give my friends who are, more assistance by not allowing my health to decline due to my fears for them.  Here out of the cyclones path we will be of more help if we are fit and equipped to roll up our selves and do an extra few hours work once this s over and be able to send money to help out in what will be a massive clean up and rescue operation even as others are going on around the country from flooding.

I read a tip on a forum post I am going to try to stick to.  It suggested that if you are not immediately personally affected by the cyclone to only listen to the news for up to 30 minutes every half hour.  There is a temptation to put the news channel on and live through the ordeal and grieve non stop for days.  I have done that for other serious weather events and fires even when not personally in danger and it can take a tole on my fitness and cause a decline in health.  That is not going to help those in danger or affected in the aftermath, one iota.  So while not being callous and appearing to not caring, I have set news rations in place as from now. I am already deeply worried about friends and the general population in Yasi's path and was brought to tears listening to Queensland Premier Bligh's  most recent address to the people in the affected are, on TV.

Hard for me to talk positive or blog about happy things when I am so genuinely afraid for people.

I don't often pray but  I am praying for the people of North Queensland.
Maintaining my health by not over stressing the situation from the safety of Victoria in the south will make be far better equipped to offer what help I can to my friends in the north in Yasi's aftermath.

Mass evacuations are underway in the northeastern Australian state of Queensland in anticipation of what forecasters expect will be the largest cyclone ever to hit the continent. Yasi has intensified rapidly and currently has winds gusting up to 295 kilometers per hour (183 mph). It is expected to maintain that intensity—equivalent to a Category Five hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale--until landfall in northeastern Queensland between Cairns and Innisfail during the late evening local time on Feb. 2 (early morning Feb. 2 in the United States).

I just had to bully my 70 year old husband out of using the exercise bike in the middle of the hottest part of the day during a heatwave.  Grrr.  Just call me 'nagging Nana'. I mean well.
I want to share some tips on recognizing and preventing heat related health issues.

Heat  affect Health problems can range from mild discomfort to full-fledged emergencies. Even young people who are exercising during heatwaves are being treated for heat stroke and the ambulance services are asking everyone to 'slow down', take it easy during the hottest part of the day.

Higher temperatures of over 40 degrees have arrived in many areas of Australia this week.   Seniors are at greater risk from heat related health problems, if you have an elderly neighbour who lives alone, check up on theme, even offer to do the shopping for them.

  Heat Stroke Treatment

  Heat Stroke Help

Heat stress occurs when a strain is placed on the body as a result of hot weather.

Heat fatigue is a feeling of weakness brought on by high outdoor temperature. Symptoms include cool, moist skin and a weakened pulse. The person may feel faint.

Heat syncope is sudden dizziness experienced after exercising in the heat. The skin appears pale and sweaty but is generally moist and cool. The pulse may be weakened, and the heart rate is usually rapid. Body temperature is normal.

Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms in the abdomen, arms, or legs following strenuous activity. The skin is usually moist and cool and the pulse is normal or slightly raised. Body temperature is mostly normal. Heat cramps often are caused by a lack of salt in the body, but salt replacement should not be considered without advice from a physician.

Heat exhaustion is a warning that the body is getting too hot. The person may be thirsty, giddy, weak, uncoordinated, nauseous, and sweating profusely. The body temperature is usually normal and the pulse is normal or raised. The skin is cold and clammy. Although heat exhaustion often is caused by the body’s loss of water and salt, salt supplements should only be taken with advice from a doctor.

Heat stroke can be LIFE-THREATENING! Victims of heat stroke almost always die so immediate medical attention is essential when problems first begin. A person with heat stroke has a body temperature above 104° F. Other symptoms may include confusion, combativeness, bizarre behavior, faintness, staggering, strong rapid pulse, dry flushed skin, lack of sweating, possible delirium or coma.

Preventing Heat Related Health Conditions

Wear light-colored, lightweight, clothing that is loose-fitting for air circulation.
  • Wear a hat or use an umbrella when outside, even if you are not in the direct sun. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater anytime you go outside.
  • Water is the beverage of choice in the summer. Drink water before outdoor activities an drink water at regular intervals during the day. Avoid beverages with caffeine or alcoholic beverages that can aid dehydration.
  • Try to schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day--before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
  • During outdoor activity, take rest breaks frequently and drink water every 15 to 20 minutes, even if you don't feel thirsty. If you have clear, pale urine, you are probably drinking enough fluids.
  • If you have a chronic medical problem, talk with your doctor about additional precautions you should take to prevent heat related illness. Some conditions and medications may place you at higher risk.
If you show any signs of heat related illness try to get to a cooler place as soon as possible, sip some cool fluids and sponge yourself off with lukewarm tap water.

Mine was Pati Singe.

She not only got healthy for herself by expressed the desire to do it to inspire her own large extended family and she is still doing this today, she goes on radio to reach her extended family and talks about healthy eating and ...exercise. As her family of Torres Strait Islanders had more to lose than those of us of European descent from obesity given their higher risk for diabetes and many other lifestyle diseases, the changes Patti made to her thinking and life had the greatest impact on improving the health of a large community. She is doing everything she said she would do.

I think I warmed to Patti because I also love the land and people of the Torres Strait.

I know others finalists are motivational people sharing it on as well.
Alison, Bob, Sharif are wonderful positive lifestyle models.
Lisa was inspiring.

How can you have a favourite?
All brilliant people.

Who was/is your favorite?

My day started writing and watching the sun rise. Beautiful.

Reg and I had a lovely Christmas Day.  I relaxed with my feet up writing while Reg read his Christmas present, a where to fish along the Goulburn River book,  this morning.  Then we had roast chicken, Reg cooked, for dinner
.

I rang both daughters and wished the extended family merry Christmas.
I gave us both a foot spa and pedicure after this we watched an old but good film together and wept at the sentimental parts.

Reg is off to bed now and I showers got into my nighty and I'm just relaxing and writing a little before I too turn out the lights.  Our big family get together is tomorrow.  I am so looking forward to it.

This is something that concerns me as I have worked within the hospital and aged care sector and 'seen things' and I know how important highly qualified staff is.  I believe in supporting qualified and dedicated nursing staff and that needs to be done by providing adequate wage and condition compensation for a the work involved.

Nurses unions say the Federal Government will face a crippling shortage of aged care nurses if it does not raise wages in the sector.

The Federal Minister for Ageing, Mark Butler, is meeting his state counterparts in Melbourne today.

He says he recognises concerns about wages and he is waiting for Fair Work Australia's response to a pay claim from aged care workers.

But Yvonne Chaperon from the Australian Nursing Federation says the Government should act immediately.

"Nurses are probably saying well we'd rather be employed in the public hospital sector because the wages are far better, and if I'm going to be paid 300 dollars a week less than my colleagues in the public hospital system for the same or similar work I'd much rather be employed by the hospitals," she said.

"We believe that the wages gap, that is aged care nurses and carers not receiving the same wages as their counterparts in the public hospital system, actually stops active recruitment into that sector."

This is certainly worth a second look.
Actor Clint Eastwood has been using transcendental meditation for almost 40 years. Hollywood A-listers, including Clint Eastwood, have joined US military veterans to promote what they called the near-miraculous powers of meditation in overcoming war stress.

The event in New York drew an unlikely alliance ranging from fashion designer Donna Karan to traumatised veterans of World War II, Vietnam and Iraq.

Uniting them was a belief that transcendental meditation - dubbed TM for short - is the cheapest, most effective and medication-free way of healing people who have suffered severe stress in war and any other extreme experience.

"I'm a great supporter of transcendental meditation. I've been using it for almost 40 years now. I think it's a great tool for anyone to have," said Eastwood, best known for playing hardened characters on screen.

The fundraising event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was organised by experimental filmmaker David Lynch, whose Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and Peace encourages meditation along the lines espoused by famed guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Lynch has launched a project, named "Operation Warrior Wellness", aimed to train 10,000 veterans in the art of finding inner peace.

Critics have cast doubt on the value of meditation for treating psychological disorders.

But Lynch says there are "a lot of misunderstandings about meditation".

He believes the technique can help everyone from disruptive school pupils to soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

PTSD is an increasingly high-profile problem among servicemen returning from Afghanistan and Iraq, a large number of whom are believed to fear revealing their disorder to military health staff.

Vietnam vet Dan Burks gave a moving account of the mental scars he carried after a battle in which he says he killed Vietnamese soldiers and lost many of his own troops.

"[PTSD] is a wound. It takes your life away, just like losing a limb," he said.

"But guess what - you can get rid of it."

He described his life after discovery of transcendental meditation as "the difference between heaven and hell".

Another veteran, World War II pilot, Jerry Yellin, told the fundraiser that for three decades after the end of the war against Japan he "found no satisfaction in life in anything I did".

At age 51, he took up TM and says he found peace.

"We have the ability to teach young people who are suffering tremendously ... young people who are in a foreign land," he said of today's veterans.

One of those, a former infantry soldier in Iraq, says TM "cleared the skies and I could tell where I was going".

"I felt this warm groovy feeling," he said.

"It just gets better and better."

The star-studded event saw testimonials from fashion designer Karan and British comedian Russell Brand.

Brand says he had suffered severe stress from his much-publicised sex and drugs addictions but found solace in TM.

"I felt love - sort of love for myself, but also love for everyone else," he said in a rambling speech delivered in his trademark hyper-energised style.

"I am a human being and it is applicable to all human beings. Someone, everyone can draw from it."
