Obsolete Occupations Jobs Of Yesteryear. As computers and automated systems increasingly take the jobs humans once held, entire professions are now extinct but we have a nostalgic past that is kept alive through the work of skilled writers who research the past and share it with the current generation. When I looked at these obsolete jobs, I could vividly remember most of them as being from my own lifetime. I remember our old, ice chest and the man driving his draft horse and cart down the road, yelling out, ‘ICE-O’, and then stopping when hailed and carrying the block of ice into the house for you. My sister joining the typing pool, I worked on a telephone switchboard for a short time. Some of these jobs would today, require high risk life insurance due to the dangers, such as that encountered by the river drivers, those men, sometimes called, river pigs, who rode the logs, often tied together like rafts, keeping them moving, from the upstream logging sites to the sawmills downstream. Click through the gallery to see examples those oft-forgotten jobs and as a writer consider keeping the memory of this past, our own family’s history, alive.
